Survey Fleet
Our Survey Vessels
The NHA operates two ships dedicated to hydrographic surveying. Each ship is equipped with cutting-edge echo to measure water depth, map the seabed and identify navigational hazards.
NNS LANA
Commissioned on December 9, 2021, the NNS LANA is a state-of-the-art hydrographic survey vessel designed to strengthen Nigeria's maritime capabilities. At 60.10 meters in length and 11.50 meters in breadth, this aluminum-built auxiliary vessel embodies advanced engineering and cutting-edge technology, making it a vital asset for hydrographic and oceanographic operations.
Equipped with a robust array of survey instruments, the NNS LANA boasts dual Kongsberg Multibeam Echosounders (EM2040 and EM304) for shallow and deep-water seabed mapping, alongside single-beam echosounders, a side scan sonar, and a sub-bottom profiler to ensure comprehensive underwater surveys. Its Seapath 380-5 Hybrid Positioning System and RTK GPS deliver precise geospatial data, while the K-Sync synchronization unit enhances multi-sensor integration for seamless data collection.
Oceanographic operations are powered by tools such as the CTD Rosette Sampler, ADCP, and Sound Velocity Profiler, complemented by meteorological systems for comprehensive environmental monitoring. The NNS LANA is also equipped with marine data management systems and a range of equipment for coastal and offshore resource exploration.
This flagship vessel embodies the National Hydrographic Agency's commitment to advancing maritime safety, resource management, and scientific exploration. It underscores our capacity to support regional hydrography, contributing to safer navigation, sustainable marine resource utilization, and Nigeria’s standing in global maritime initiatives
NNS OCHUZO
Commissioned on May 30, 2024, the NNS OCHUZO stands as a critical asset in Nigeria’s maritime survey operations. With a length of 35 meters and a beam of 8.15 meters, this aluminum-alloy vessel combines compact design with cutting-edge technology, enabling it to perform a wide range of hydrographic and oceanographic tasks. It boasts a seven-day endurance and a range of 300 nautical miles, making it ideal for sustained offshore missions.
The NNS OCHUZO is equipped with advanced hydrographic tools, including the Kongsberg EM 2040C Multibeam Echo Sounder for detailed seabed mapping and Valeport sound velocity sensors for precise measurements. Supporting these systems are a Kongsberg Seapath 380 Motion Reference Unit and Trimble RTK GPS, ensuring unmatched positional accuracy. For oceanographic research, it features a CTD Rosette Sampler, a Vessel-mounted ADCP, and a SeaCAT Thermosalinograph for analyzing water properties.
To ensure seamless data acquisition and processing, the vessel is outfitted with specialized hydrographic workstations and software, including HYPACK Max 2023, CARIS HIPS and SIPS, and SIS Acquisition Software. This enables the NNS OCHUZO to deliver high-quality survey results efficiently.
Beyond hydrography, the vessel’s capabilities extend to geotechnical and seismic surveys, fisheries monitoring, and search and rescue operations. With its versatile design and cutting-edge technology, the NNS OCHUZO exemplifies the National Hydrographic Agency’s dedication to enhancing maritime safety, resource exploration, and environmental monitoring in Nigeria and beyond.
Launches
Complementing these ships are four specialized survey launches, strategically deployed to key locations nationwide. These smaller yet equally capable boats bring hydrographic surveying closer to coastal areas and inland waterways, showcasing NHA’s commitment to comprehensive and efficient maritime safety. Together, this fleet exemplifies cutting-edge technology and precision, driving NHA’s mission of safer and more navigable waterways.
